Treasure, Focus, Trust

Treasure, Focus, Trust – Matthew 6

Like much of the world, Namibia is in lock down. Apart from essential workers, no one is permitted to leave their homes except for groceries and medical needs. On Sunday we held one of our Thrive Bible studies over WhatsApp and had a surprisingly good time “together.” We read from Matthew 6 and were all challenged by Jesus’ words during this strange time.

Read Matthew 6:19-21

19 “Do not lay up for yourselves treasures on earth, where moth and rust destroy and where thieves break in and steal, 20 but lay up for yourselves treasures in heaven, where neither moth nor rust destroys and where thieves do not break in and steal. 21 For where your treasure is, there your heart will be also.

We are facing a time when our health, jobs, finances, food supply and many other basics of life are being threatened. In these verses Jesus tells us that our hearts are with the things that we treasure. Further, we are assured that if our treasures are in the things of God, nothing can threaten them; no moths, rust, virus or economic struggles can touch them. As we discussed this, we saw how this pandemic has revealed the things we truly treasure and has drawn our attention to the things that really matter.

Read Matthew 6:22-24

22 “The eye is the lamp of the body. So, if your eye is healthy, your whole body will be full of light, 23 but if your eye is bad, your whole body will be full of darkness. If then the light in you is darkness, how great is the darkness!

24 “No one can serve two masters, for either he will hate the one and love the other, or he will be devoted to the one and despise the other. You cannot serve God and money.

Here we find that what we focus on tells us something about who we serve. If our eyes are healthy, we are full of light! As we read together, we saw the need to focus our attention on Christ and allow His light to fill our lives. While keeping informed with the news is important, the things of this world cannot be our primary focus.

Read Matthew 6:25-34

25 “Therefore I tell you, do not be anxious about your life, what you will eat or what you will drink, nor about your body, what you will put on. Is not life more than food, and the body more than clothing? 26 Look at the birds of the air: they neither sow nor reap nor gather into barns, and yet your heavenly Father feeds them. Are you not of more value than they? 27 And which of you by being anxious can add a single hour to his span of life? 28 And why are you anxious about clothing? Consider the lilies of the field, how they grow: they neither toil nor spin, 29 yet I tell you, even Solomon in all his glory was not arrayed like one of these. 30 But if God so clothes the grass of the field, which today is alive and tomorrow is thrown into the oven, will he not much more clothe you, O you of little faith? 31 Therefore do not be anxious, saying, ‘What shall we eat?’ or ‘What shall we drink?’ or ‘What shall we wear?’ 32 For the Gentiles seek after all these things, and your heavenly Father knows that you need them all. 33 But seek first the kingdom of God and his righteousness, and all these things will be added to you.

34 “Therefore do not be anxious about tomorrow, for tomorrow will be anxious for itself. Sufficient for the day is its own trouble.

Finally, in verses 25-34 Jesus reminds us that our Father is faithful to take care of His world and that He is worthy to be trusted. We are given the freedom to leave behind worry and anxiety. We are called to seek first His Kingdom and His righteousness and trust Him to add the rest.

We share this with you in hopes that you might be encouraged by this scripture as we were this week. As our lives are  interrupted may we treasure the things of God, focus on the light of Christ and trust the God of creation to care for us all.

Prayer Requests March 2020

By: David Echols

2020 has already seen its share of ups and downs! Pray with us!

Please pray for:

  • COVID-19: As we pray for our world, we ask that you keep Namibia in your prayers as well. We currently have only 11 confirmed cases, but need to take care not to let it get out of hand for the following reasons:
    • Our hospitals have very limited ICU space.
    • We have a shortage of ventilators.
    • Our neighborhood in Katutura has one of the highest concentrations of HIV and Tuberculosis in the world making it a very high risk community.
  • Pray for God to provide ideas for discipleship during the lock down. We do not have the same online ministry opportunities as much of the world as we minister to a lot of people who do not have internet access at this time. We are currently doing Bible studies over WhatsApp for those who do have access and we are making a lot of phone calls.
  • New Christians, we have 10 new Christians since November and they are all isolated right now. They are, for the most part, the ones without internet access and some do not even have phones. Three were baptized just a week before the restrictions were put in place.
  • Health for the Echols. Sandy has some health issues that put her in the high risk category, pray that we can keep healthy.
  • Future plans for 3 Measures.

Prayer Requests December 2019

2019 has been a year of expansion for 3 Measures, here’s how you can pray for us going into 2020!

Please pray for:

  • Pray for the 3 Measures Mission Center! We are trying to buy our own building, please pray for us to find the investors we need here in Namibia and for the donors we need in the USA. For more information about the building and to see where you might be able to help, click here.
  • 3 Measures First Aid (3MFA) is a new job creation/first aid initiative we are in the early stages of. In January Raylin will begin working with an incubation center to establish it into a viable business.
  • Continue to pray for guidance as we seek new opportunities for Hope Cafe. Things have been going really well so far, but we have grown too big for our space. We are getting closer to being fully self sustaining, but still have a ways to go before we can hire staff and pay for the internet.
  • Pray for the three new Thrive communities and for opportunity to start even more.
  • Young & Pregnant, is coming again in January. Pray for us as we look for young girls to be a part of the training.
  • Pray for our family!

“Yes, establish the work of our hands!”

Our first months back in Namibia have been busy. In our last newsletter we shared how God provided a new house and how we were able to quickly get ourselves settled in. Since then, we’ve been working ourselves back into the ministry and we can already see God at work! Read on to see what we have been up to.

We’re Back!

Settling In
Things are coming together well. God has provided us with a great house and we are getting settled in quite nicely. The house is in a good location, has three bedrooms and has a good sized yard for the boys to play in. Sandy is doing a great job homeschooling the kids and they both really like it. They seem to be adjusting pretty well so far, but they really miss their grandparents. Please keep them in your prayers.

E. Pluribus Unum

Out of many, one.

This is the motto on the seal of the United States. Originally the meaning was intended to show that out of many states, the country is one nation. I like to believe too that, in a way, America is made up of people from all over the world. I am incredibly privileged and thankful to say that in two weeks I will take the oath and finally be a US citizen. I will become one of the many that make up with beautiful nation.

Going Back to Namibia

With Sandy’s citizenship journey coming to an end on January 16th, we are in our final weeks here in America. There is a lot to do, we’re busy with passports, visas, packing, booking plane tickets and more. We’re also trying to find partners to help us return. We’re still in need of monthly support and one-time help to get us back.

First, we will need some start up funds for our return. We had to get rid of much of our furniture, appliances and one of our cars before leaving last year. We’ll also have airfare & visa expenses when we get back. Our total estimated return expenses are $16,600. We have been saving toward this & have had some very generous friends and churches help already. We currently have $11,525 set aside, leaving us with a remaining one-time need of $5,075. To see the details of our return budget, you can find it here.

Next, we are still a bit short on our monthly needs, but we are getting close! We just need another $597 in monthly commitments! This would mean a full ministry budget as well as the ability to begin a retirement plan. We really hope to reach this goal before returning to the field in the coming months. To request a detailed breakdown of our budget, click here.

Please consider getting involved. If you would like to give a one time gift to help get us back or would like to join the team with a monthly contribution, you can give online today! Click here

To all of you, we thank you for the support throughout the years! Your prayer and financial partnerships have been such a blessing and have allowed us all to be a part of what God is doing in Namibia!
